The Historical Atlas of Lowell is built on new scholarship and also the previous scholarly work of historians, geographers, social scientists, and scholars working in other fields. Although the site doesn't use footnotes, each project provides an annotated bibliography that outlines the sources making the project possible.

One of the guiding principles of the site is that there exist a tremendous amount of academic scholarship of great interest that is not particularly accessible to a general population. By visualizing and making more interactive this scholarship, The Historical Atlas seeks to bring it to a broader audience.
